Wikipedia: A blog (short for web log) is a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject and can take on many forms. It can be used a an online diary or as a place to provide commentary on your favourite topics. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Blogs also provide readers with the option to leave comments, which makes it possible to start a discussion about a particular topic that was blogged about. According to Technorati, the Blogosphere is doubling in size every 6 months. This article is a personal account which describes and reflects on the use of blogs (web diaries) within the Diploma of E-Learning, delivered by Tropical North Queensland Technical and Further Education (TAFE), in Queensland Australia. It considers the practicalities of using blogs with students who have limited technological experience, identifies the trends in student/blog interactions over three years and discusses possible strategies for encouraging students to use blogs. The impact of blogs on the students’ own teaching practice is assessed and the work concludes with a checklist to help teachers decide whether to include blogs in their own teaching practice. The article draws heavily on personal comments made in facilitator and student blogs between 2003 and 2005. - Teaching critical blogging
